THE INSPIRATION
4-H CLUB & IRISH ROOTS
With more than 30 years of industry experience, I have been inspired by the lessons learned growing up on a farm in Southwestern Ontario and my Irish roots. These two forces have helped shape my career and my approach to business.
From a young age I was a member of the 4-H club whose motto is "learn to do by doing". The 4-H program provides youth with an opportunity to be involved, valued and heard while developing valuable life skills, ultimately, shaping them to become well-rounded adults. I was involved in many activities and have never forgotten the 4-H pledge which references your head, heart, hands, and health as a means of contribution back to your community. Without even knowing it, but acknowledging many years later in life, I adopted the 4-H mission as a key piece of my own mission and inspiration as I moved through my career in business. I’ve always been a believer that anything is possible when you commit to putting your mind and will power towards achieving it.
STRENGTH OF THE WOLF
Growing up in an Irish Canadian family I learned that the wolf has an ancient tie back to the Whalen name. In Gaelic it appeared as O’Faoilain, which is derived from the word faol, meaning wolf. So, perhaps it wasn’t pure coincidence that I was always drawn to the natural beauty and strength of the wolf.
There are many elements from the wolf that relates to business; pride, respect, loyalty, teamwork, cunning, strategic, protective, and a commitment to family and the pack.
LEADERSHIP & GROWTH
In today’s ever changing business world, being successful largely comes down to strong leadership coupled with surrounding one’s self with a highly competent team of people. Constantly challenging the status quo and striving for continuous improvement must become part of the institutional culture to not only survive as an organization, but to thrive. People must be led to look forward to change versus fearing it – it’s either plan to change or accept becoming its victim.
